POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Engineering Manager, Advanced Pack Technology
Reports To: VP of Mechanical Engineering and System Integration
Classification: Exempt
Status: Regular, Full-time
Location: Auburn Hills, MI, or Midland, MI
Job Summary:
The Advanced Pack Technology Engineering Manager is an important team leader responsible for the research and development of forward-looking battery pack technologies. The team is responsible for seeking new technologies that may be incorporated within future Freudenberg Battery Power Systems (FBPS) products and evaluating such topics based on safety, performance, BMS integration, cost, quality, DFMA, and overall business needs. It is expected that this candidate understands and can balance the value of novel product design together with detailed requirements of high volume production and overall business needs. Successful candidates are expected to judiciously navigate scenarios having a high level of uncertainty using effective and risk mitigating techniques.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide technical leadership of advanced battery pack engineering, analysis, and design activities.
Proactively seek and execute technology advancement practices to maximize output of functional product attributes such as energy density, cost, and ease of customer integration.
Activity support advanced product modeling by working closely with cell and pack modeling teams.
Develop and maintain resource plan inclusive of direct reports as well as hired engineering services to manage resources as needed in the execution of advanced engineering projects.
Keep abreast of current and future trends relating to lithium ion battery pack technology and integration in their host systems.
Maintain an understanding of current and future regulatory standards and their impact on future products.
Work closely with product development leaders while providing detailed reports to document / convey learnings from future state technology investigations.
Additional Support Responsibilities:
Drive robust processes & disciplines relating to advanced engineering research and development.
Pro-actively support product development teams by delivering high quality advanced concepts to the product development teams.
Work closely with marketing functions and application engineers to understand customer technical requirements.
Oversee intellectual property development of FBPS advanced technologies while keeping abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies.
Assess competitive technologies for system level innovation, cost, performance, and functional advantages.
Position Qualifications:
M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (B.S. acceptable with sufficient experience).
Minimum 10 years of experience in design / release of electrical and mechanical components or systems.
Minimum five years of experience in electric vehicle programs and battery design and/or integration.
Understanding of cell chemistries and commercially available cell form factors.
Understanding of advanced simulation and modeling techniques.
Practical knowledge and experience with cell integration topics including, but not limited to, thermal management, cell bus bar connects, mechanical retention, BMS integration, and safety.
Understanding of Battery Management Systems and potential battery system interfaces.
Understanding of high volume production processes, tools, and methods.
Understanding of state of the art materials commonly used within battery systems (plastics, composites, metals, insulators, thermal management elements, and others).
Experience leading projects through the complete product development cycle.
Working knowledge / practical experience using scrum or agile techniques is preferred.
