Building Inspector

Summary

Under the general supervision of the Building Official, the position performs advanced plan review and inspection fieldwork for residential buildings and structures. Promotes effective and uniform enforcement of building codes, including but not limited to state, county, and city codes, requiring incumbent to continue education and certification in appropriate building and inspection fields to remain current in code changes through approved courses. Performs plans examinations and inspections, structures, and examines building plans for compliance. Skilled judgment, discretion, and interpretation are required to solve a wide range of technical, administrative, and productivity challenges; and to properly apply codes, regulations, and principles of mechanics to specific situations. Must have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships among staff, with other agencies, and County departments; read, evaluate, understand, and make well-reasoned interpretations of complex, technical regulations, plans, specifications, and engineering/architect drawings; demonstrate skilled judgment and discretion to solve a range of technical, administrative and productivity challenges.

Required Education and Experience

· High School Diploma

· 5 years’ work experience in construction field or performing building inspections PLUS

· 2 years of progressively responsible experience working with construction projects, building enforcement, land use or zoning.

· Experience in performing Residential Inspections for a jurisdiction for the required certifications listed below.

· Valid Oregon Driver’s License

Must possess a combination of the following certifications:

· Residential Electrical Inspector

· Residential Structural Inspector

· Residential Mechanical Inspector

· Residential Plumbing Inspector

Preferred Education and Experience

· A-Level Plumbing Inspector

· Manufactured Home Inspection certification

Building Inspector Senior

Summary

Under the general supervision of the Building Official, the position performs advanced plan review and inspection fieldwork for all types of buildings and structures. Promotes effective and uniform enforcement of building codes, including but not limited to state, county, and city codes, requiring incumbent to continue education and certification in appropriate building and inspection fields to remain current in code changes through approved courses. Performs highly complex plans examinations and inspections of all kinds of buildings, structures, and examines building plans for compliance. The position also meets with County Officials, developers, designers, contractors and owners to help identify and resolve issues. Skilled judgment, discretion, and interpretation are required to solve a wide range of technical, administrative, and productivity challenges; and to properly apply codes, regulations, and principles of mechanics to specific situations. Must have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships among staff, with other agencies, and County departments; read, evaluate, understand, and make well-reasoned interpretations of complex, technical regulations, plans, specifications, and engineering/architect drawings; demonstrate skilled judgment and discretion to solve a range of technical, administrative and productivity challenges; perform complex building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical inspections.

Required Education and Experience

· High School Diploma

· 5 years’ work experience in construction field or performing building inspections PLUS

· 2 years of progressively responsible experience working with construction projects, building enforcement, land use or zoning.

· Valid Oregon Driver’s License

Must possess the following certifications:

· A-level Structural Inspector

· A-level Mechanical Inspector

Preferred Education and Experience

· Manufactured Home Inspection certification

· Two, One-and-Two-Family-Dwelling certifications

· Working experience in Fire, Life, Safety Plan review
