Engineers perform all aspects of outside plant infrastructure design for utility companies and should have a thorough knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in electrical and/or civil engineering environments, preferably in the utility industry. Engineers serve as technical resources and leaders and are expected to be able to apply experience and knowledge to achieve expected outcomes, even when guidelines, processes and procedures do not exist. They are relied upon to implement company, client and industry policies and procedures as well as government codes and regulations to ensure accuracy, security, and compliance. An Engineer II will also be expected to recommend new and/or improvements to documentation where needed as well as alterations and enhancements to improve product quality.
Demonstrates technical expertise and leadership.
Coordinates, plans and executes work orders for fielding, drafting and/or design of outside plant infrastructure while meeting quality, time and budget constraints
Conducts engineering calculations to assure the safety and performance of equipment and systems
Monitors design work to ensure compliance with Client and Industry engineering and construction codes and practices
Reviews completed design work for quality of design and adequacy of documentation
Assists in the creation of design estimates and/or proposals
Performs planning taking into consideration assessments of current and future telecom/power infrastructure needs
Perform an economic analysis of engineering alternatives taking into consideration costs of construction and maintenance
Monitors construction work to ensure conformance with project design plans and specifications
Performs a variety of walkouts or kickoff/scope meetings regardless of project, program or customer to assist in route analysis, preparation of scope and/or to assist in the preparation of bid documentation
Performs walkouts with contractors to review most types of completed construction regardless of the project, program or customer for accuracy and quality
Demonstrates technical ability, professional judgment and communication skills to instruct others
Aid in evaluation and approval of sub contractor's invoices
Develops and manages project/program-specific budgets; monitors financial results and reports to senior management on progress
May be asked to prepare, sign and seal, and submit engineering plans and drawings to authorities having jurisdiction for approval, or seal engineering work for public and private clients, if licensed Professional Engineer
Education or Experience: Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering / Engineering Technology and 7+ years of demonstrated experience in the Electric or Telecom Utility Industry; management may consider other education and/or work experience to be acceptable for an appointment to this position. Highly proficient in competencies of multiple functions (Drafter, Field Technician, Designer)
Able to identify and implement the specifications, processes, and standards that are common to the industry and those that are specific to a project, program or customer
Experienced in Planning and/or Construction
Proven leadership skills
Ability to read and comprehend engineering schematics
Knowledge of construction and planning procedures
Strong technical knowledge and skills
Ability to learn and operate customer based proprietary software and other computer systems to expedite and facilitate the work order process
Strong oral and written communication skills
Basic financial skills to assist in making sound business decisions
Able to work in all weather conditions
Willing to travel overnight during the week
Dependable transportation and valid driver s license and insurance
Able to pass a background check/drug test/driving record check
Computer literate – especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
Authorized to work in the United States
Must be able to endure frequent/lengthy: Driving, standing, walking long distances (5 miles or more in a day), navigating rough terrain on foot and lifting/balancing objects that may weigh up to ~20 lbs. and require the use of upper extremities and back muscles; work in proximity to moving vehicles in the right of way.
Must be able to endure frequent, lengthy periods of sedentary work and sit for prolonged periods of time, including sitting at a desk and driving in a vehicle.
Must be able to utilize a computer keyboard, computer monitor, and telephone for prolonged periods of time.
Must have the physical ability to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing notes, and viewing a computer terminal; these activities require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Must have the physical ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, often in a group setting.
Must have the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.
