As a senior member of the Central Engineering team, the Senior Electrical Engineer will provide technical expertise on electrical and control systems within Vale’s Manitoba Operations. The Senior Engineer will provide innovative engineering solutions, technical support to operating plants and mines, technical direction to external engineering consultants & construction contractors and will also provide technical guidance and mentoring to other members of the Central Engineering team.
This is a full-time (permanent) position, based in Thompson, Manitoba.
As a member of the Central Engineering team, provide expert technical expertise/support to the entire Manitoba Division.
Develop engineering services scopes of work for contracting overflow engineering work with external engineering consultants. Provide technical direction to external engineering consultants and review the quality of their engineering deliverables.
Provide technical direction to construction contractors and assess the quality of their work in the field.
Execute in-house electrical engineering studies/assessments and design work.
Responsible for translating operational needs into detailed design requirements.
Responsible for the accurate preparation of engineering design deliverables such as drawings, specifications, scopes of work, risk assessments and cost estimates.
Responsible for reviewing the work of others within Central Engineering and assuming professional responsibility for the work of others who do not have a professional license to practice.
Provide technical support to the operations and maintenance teams to ensure reliable operation of electrical distribution equipment and industrial controls/instrumentation.
Effectively schedule, prioritize and manage tasks using MS Office Project tools to meet commitments with customers. Function as the team leader/member of single discipline and multi-discipline engineering projects. Coordinates activities, information, materials and resources within own area of responsibility.
Development of engineering processes, engineering standards and equipment specifications within area of responsibility.
Responsible for ensuring compliance with codes, standards and regulations.
Expected to demonstrate flexibility by taking on multifunctional roles that include engineering leadership assignments, team administration duties and championing specific assignments.
The position involves regular trips to underground mines and to the various surface plants.
Support the Safe Production model of risk and hazard management and lead by example.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
Eligible to register as a licensed Professional Engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
Minimum of eight years of engineering work experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and other regulations, codes and standards applicable within Canada.
Proficient in the use of common software tools such as MS Project, MS Office, AutoCAD and Microstation. Experience with electrical engineering software.
Must have electrical and controls engineering experience, including experience working in a heavy industrial operating plant, preferably in the mining industry.
Industrial power distribution experience including power system studies and grounding system design.
Knowledge of electric machines such as transformers and motors, including maintenance and testing.
Experience with motor controls including soft starters and VFDs.
Experience working with PLC and HMI systems, including programming.
Experience with industrial instrumentation will be considered beneficial for this position.
