South Dakota Public Broadcasting Is seeking a Broadcast Engineer or Technician who is looking to use their organizational skills and knowledge in broadcast and telecommunications to join our engineering team to support the Eastern portion of our statewide TV & FM Radio network.

Must work in harsh work conditions, examples during the winter.
Schedule maintenance to minimize productivity lost due to travel time required to my various sites.
Scheduling assigned vehicle for servicing or repairs to minimize down time.
Some equipment we have requires two persons due to its size or weight.
Working outside in the winter or in hot buildings during the summer.
Working alone with high voltages present in the power supplies and transmitters as well as high level RF energy in the equipment. When working overnight, must be effective when working during the non-broadcast hours which start at midnight.
Working on tall ladders to reach some of the building’s air handling equipment for maintenance.

Licenses and Certifications:
2 years certification or equivalent training in RF engineering and basic electronic theory.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Solid skills in high power RF transmission and point to point MW radio interconnect. Skills maintaining engine generators helpful.

Responsible for:
monitoring the operation of the ATSC, FM and IBOC high power transmitters;
reviewing the off-air signal to insure the quality of transmission and the metering history of the transmitter to see trends or problems developing;
analyzing and repair of the transmitter’s ATSC exciters, FM/IBOC exciters, power amplifiers when problems arise;
ordering and installing parts as needed for repairs and maintaining a spare parts inventory on-site;
performs power output calibration when needed;
performs frequency calibration when needed, and checks transmitter air filters and changes air filters if required;
maintenance of the building air handling system which includes monthly filter checks and replacement as necessary, blower bearings lubrications, blower V-belt changes as needed;
taking the transmitter’s metering routinely;
performs visual inspections of the tower, guy wires, and guy anchors every three months or 90 days which ever occurs first to detect any anomalies;
required to visit the transmitter site routinely to insure proper functioning of systems, not monitored by remote means to detect any deterioration of the site equipment. These systems include a microwave radio system, backup television and FM radio paths in the event of failure of a section of the mainline path, the building air handling system which keeps the television and radio transmitters cooled, the television antenna deicing system, and the commercial power electrical supply monitoring panel with it’s associated surge suppressors;
Digital (ATSC) and FM translators located through out the state;
on site AC power generation maintenance;
monthly grass cutting and weed control;
determining trends due to transmitter metering readings;
problem diagnosis and parts required for repair, time available for repair to minimize off-the-air conditions;
cost effective purchase of parts.
