Position Summary

Inside Technical Sales position is available for energetic sales-oriented person preferably with a mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering degree or a business degree with the aptitude to sell mechanical or electrical devices in a consultative selling environment. Thermal Devices is a growing industrial distributor specializing in the sale and application of industrial process heaters and process control equipment. Our heaters and controls are used in the manufacturing of products in industries such as rubber, glass, plastic, cement, food, chemicals, packaging, filtration, etc.

Technical Sales person will be responsible for taking incoming inquiries, customer support, support of outside representatives, and for acquiring new accounts and/or projects in accordance with the Company sales processes and goals.


Education: The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience. Candidates with a non-technical degree but with relevant mechanical or electrical aptitude will be considered.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 3+ years of Technical Sales experience is preferred.

Physical Job Requirements: Required to sit, stand and move throughout company facilities. Might occasionally need to perform job responsibilities in an industrial, construction site or general outdoor environment around heavy machinery and equipment.

Professional: The ability to pass skills and knowledge onto others and the composure to represent the Company favorably under all circumstances.

Technical: This position requires proficiency in electrical thermal systems, including but not limited to, electric heaters, temperature and process sensors, and power and temperature controls in a low voltage (< 600VAC) environment.

Key Activities

  • Customer Support/Order Processing. Handle incoming customer inquiries and process purchase orders proficiently and efficiently.
  • Sales. Develop new relationships with customers and maintain existing relationships. Growth is the main focus.
  • Customer Relations. Maintain the Company’s relationships with current customers. Develop relationships with new customers. Educate current and potential customers about Company’s competencies.
  • New Business. Identify, develop and generate new business activity. A significant amount of time will be dedicated to telephone prospecting, which includes but not limited to obtaining new customers, growing existing business within current customer base, and retaining existing customer base.
  • Support. Technical support for customers and other sales personnel.
  • Best Practices. Participate in the development and implementation of process improvement initiatives.

Candidate Requirements

Qualified candidates must currently be living within 1-hour drive of Mount Airy, Maryland. An interest in B2B sales and an outgoing personality are required as is the ability to work independently.

The ability to very clearly and effectively communicate technical information over the telephone is critical for this position and successful candidates will be evaluated for this particular skill in addition to the other position requirements.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time exempt position in a sales office with occasional site visits to industrial manufacturing plants, construction sites and similar environments. Business hours are between 8:00am to 5:00pm EST.
