GCI's Telecommunications Engineer III s upports multiple departments and will be responsible for defining user requirements, architectural design, detailed engineering, estimating project costs, generation of bills of material, system drawings, and written methods of procedure. Position responsible for testing and implementation of system in accordance with industry standards and codes.
Develops system architectural drawings, block diagrams, detailed wiring and installation drawings, scopes of work, bills of materials, and methods of procedures using various software applications such as AutoCAD, Adobe, and Microsoft office suite applications.
Defines, designs, and implements telecommunications and/or system facilities utilizing standard engineering concepts of availability, efficiency, redundancy, scalability, and security.
Designs, specifies, and configures system equipment such as satellite, microwave radio, two-way radio, CCTV, Fiber Optic, multiplexer, IP-Transport, media converters, and IP network equipment in support of network operations and projects.
Designs and specifies telecom power equipment and physical facilities such as Secondary DC distribution equipment, telecom room infrastructure such as cable tray, cabinets, racks, and grounding as well as communication tower antennas and appurtenances.
Coordinates with project management and engineering teams on a regular basis. Supports and manages escalation events. Develops and updates documentation and support materials. Mentors junior engineers and technicians.
Designs and implements new solutions and continues improvement of the current network and/or systems facilities.
Ensures the integrity of high availability telecommunications and network infrastructure to provide maximum performance in design, implementation, and support.
Maximizes performance of internal and external systems using test equipment and network monitoring tools, troubleshooting network and/or system outages, scheduling up dates , and collaborating with architects on optimization .
Maintain s professional skillset by participating in educational opportunities, technical organizations, reading professional publications, and personal use of technology.
Provides detailed reports on telecom system and network operational status, and milestones related to project completion.
Provides preliminary and detailed budgetary estimates for project approvals and to develop business cases.
Capable of remote site support for off-site personnel and customers.
Additional Job Requirements : This is a senior level position and requires the ability to perform highly complex and diverse duties under deadlines and operating constraints. Design, plan, analyze, and implement telecommunications systems and networks. Must be able to make independent engineering decisions and provide technical direction for resolution. Responsible for review and provide final engineering design specifications and service requirements. Receives clear direction on assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions; supervisory assistance on unusual problems. Capable of performing project engineer on large projects with the ability of mentoring, coordinating, directing, assisting, and providing technical direction to junior engineers and technicians. Comprehensive understanding of standard engineering concepts such as high availability, redundancy, reliability and testing, security, and standards. Superior time management skills to smoothly and professionally manage multiple complex projects on time and on budget.
Essential Duties for this position:
40% Develops and updates system documentation and support materials. To include system design drawings, project estimates, scopes of work and methods of procedure.
15% Reviews and provides technical oversite on system designs and drawing packages produced by junior engineers.
15% Coordinates with system stakeholders, project management and engineering teams on a regular basis and assists with the design and implementation of new solutions and continual improvement of the current network and/or systems facilities. Provides detailed reports on network operational status, and milestones related to project completion.
15% Configures satellite, microwave radio, two-way radio, CCTV, Fiber Optic, multiplexer, IP-Transport, media converters, and network equipment in support of network operations and projects. Uses network monitoring tools, troubleshooting network and/or system outages and scheduling updates.
15% Completes site-surveys at remote locations; Provides remote support for off-site personnel and customers; Provides system installation and commissioning oversite for field technicians.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of standard telecommunication system and network engineering concepts.
Knowledge of operations and function of standard telecommunication systems with expertise in subset of these systems: satellite, microwave radio, two-way radio, CCTV, Fiber Optic, multiplexer, IP-Transport, media converters, and other Layer-2 and Layer-3 network devices and related technologies.
Familiarity with AC and DC power distribution, tower construction and regulatory environment, telecom physical infrastructure such as cable tray, cabinets, racks and grounding/bonding.
Demonstrated knowledge of IP address nomenclature, protocols and routing.
Familiarity with National Electric Code and National Electric Safety Code requirements.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to create and edit network drawings.
Ability to provide training to team members on technology.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment, professionally
Years of Experience required to meet minimum qualifications: Minimum of six years' experience in any combination within the fields listed below:
Progressive experience in RF, fiber optic, telecommunications passive infrastructure or IP networking or IP-Transport field.
Experience working with moderate to complex project management within a telecommunications environment or related field.
Level of Education required to meet minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related field is required. Or, in addition to minimum experience required; a combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis.
Certifications: Industry specific certifications highly valued and contribute toward education.
Professional level: CCDP, CCNP/advanced level, expertise with networking and skills
Expert level: CCIE
