Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Packaging Engineer’s primary responsibility is to identify and develop commercialization opportunities for new, improved, and cost-reduced packaging initiatives in addition to supporting cross-functional projects and tasks.
Responsible for the scheduling, testing, and evaluation of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components following established test methods
Analyze test data to derive correlations between package performance and product protection/stability.
Develop new package test methods, author test method qualification and transfer protocols, reports and related test methods.
Identifies and leads various initiatives at internal and/or external manufacturing locations by ensuring cross functional alignment and sustainability of improvements.
Plans and directs activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging containers: Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special-handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container.
Consults with establishment's purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.
Develops or directs development of sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging in order to present design for approval.
Work with suppliers to sample components and establish quality parameters.
Document and co-ordinate all aspects new product development projects.
Modify existing packaging solutions to meet the needs of continuous improvement exercises.
May confer with customers or sales representatives to draw up contracts.
May advise internal and external customers on efficient packing procedures, innovations in packaging materials, and utilization of sealing and fastening devices.
Develops and executes test methods, capability studies and protocols for packaging related improvements. Creates or validates packaging related SOP’s and Work Instructions. Provides training for appropriate personnel performing packaging activities.
Supports manufacturing issues and follows up with appropriate internal and/or external personnel to identify sustainable solutions. Lead or participates in root cause analysis or other improvement activities.
Communicates with associates and external contacts with clarity and authority on all related options and associated risks and potential mitigations. Able to prioritize different requests appropriately and effectively.
Manages projects for packaging improvements, alternate sourcing, efficiency and cost savings projects. Leads cross-functional teams and provides technical insight.
Consults with internal and external partners/vendors to assess and improve packaging operations and components. Validates or establishes specifications, supplier quality standards and supports supplier audits/assessments as needed.
Creates project plans and organizes resources to ensure project milestones are met within expectations of timeline, quality and budget. Identifies risks and potential mitigations before and during projects. Updates project management tools as needed. Ensure relevant documentation is up-to- date and approved.
Plans, organizes, and executes plant trials. Documents observed results, analyzes data, draws conclusions and makes recommendations.
Coordinates assigned Innovation/Renovation packaging projects (especially industrialization/commercialization).
Coordinates relevant technical services activities to scale up for industrialization/commercialization and product launches. Conducts commissioning/validation trials. Performs packaging capability assessments. Documents observed results, analyzes data, draws conclusions and makes recommendations.
Assist department with special projects and other duties as assigned.
B.S. Degree in Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Minimum 3 years of experience with packaging materials/equipment in the food industry, aseptic background preferred.
Experience with packaging development with various materials including fiberboard, corrugated, plastics, and films.
Experience writing and execute validation protocols for packaging equipment and processes.
Proficiency in packaging design in 2D/3D CAD.
Experience with R&D teams’ design progress, qualification and production builds. Interface with tooling suppliers to design packaging tooling i.e. thermoforming molds, lid dies, display box and corrugated containers.
Advanced knowledge of packaging test methodology and thorough understanding of physical and structure package testing procedures.
Experience with packaging materials used in an FDA regulated environment preferred.
Capability in directing suppliers through design, development and improvement initiatives.
Ability to manage multiple projects, as part of a cross-function team and work across all functions; including Purchasing, Operations, Quality and Sales.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as customer specifications, technical procedures, and regulations.
A background in Packaging Science & Technology
Technical Writing skills
Statistics experience and Method Validation/Qualification
Proficiency in domestic and international packaging standards and practices.
Knowledgeable of multi-disciplinary design systems to support packaging development.
