As a Research Engineer, the ideal candidate will be responsible for the design and testing of research prototypes. This person will have the responsibility to prepare test protocols and requires basic knowledge of statistical analysis. The Research Engineer must be skilled in reliably recording data and organizing and maintaining large databases of test data.
This position requires a broad scientific background, including electronics, physics, mechanics, and physiology. This position also requires experience in the use of electronic test equipment, mechanical test equipment and microscopes. Knowledge of photomicrography, histology, and pathology is desirable. A thorough knowledge of general laboratory procedures and safety considerations relevant to handling animal tissues and working with high voltage, high force and high temperature sources is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Analytically determines mechanical characteristics and load capacities of component and assembly devices
Advances the applied science of the effects of various energy forms, e.g., RF, thermal and plasma, on tissue.
Designs and tests research prototypes.
Designs study protocols.
Provides expertise to other departments on the science of various surgical instruments.
Observes clinical surgery.
Uses laboratory instruments, e.g., oscilloscopes, thermography instruments, mechanical test frames, force transducers, microscopes, and cameras.
Prepares samples of ex vivo and in vivo animal tissues.
Takes detailed and repetitive measurements using various laboratory instruments.
Participates in neuromuscular stimulation testing that may involve the safe application of electrical currents to her/himself or others.
Interfaces with contractors on the fabrication of research prototypes.
Keeps a laboratory notebook of research activities.
Delivers work product to an agreed upon schedule.
Work Experience Requirements
0 - 3 years or equivalent work experience as scientist, physicist, research assistant, or engineer.
Knowledge of appropriate standards and procedures for good laboratory practices.
Good color perception is needed for working with tissue.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers.
Position requires domestic and international travel up to 10%.
Automatically incorporates the applicable quality system elements and regulatory affairs requirements into routine activities.
Accuracy, skill thoroughness, and neatness required for performing job responsibilities.
B.S. in engineering, physics or related technical field.
Master's degree is preferred.
Significant degree of independent decision-making with limited review by next level management.
Analyzes problems in the conceptualization and design of research prototypes and suggests solutions.
Analyzes data and performs mathematical calculations.
Keeps abreast of the relevant medical and technical literature.
Excellent observational skills are required.
Must recognize when experimental results indicated a problem with test equipment or test protocol.
Contact with surgeons, other medical personnel, and veterinary personnel.
Contact with vendors, such as those supplying ex vivo tissues, laboratory supplies, fabrication of parts and test equipment.
Frequent sitting, walking and standing and use of office equipment including personal computers.
Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communications as well as communication through automated devices such as PC's, phone and video conferencing equipment.
Light physical effort - lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
