Model Based Design (MBD) Engineer for Dynamic Thermal system modeling

The MBD dynamic modeling Engineer will work with global, cross disciplinary teams to apply model based design and verification tools and methods to create the next generation of control solutions for a full range of HVAC/R equipment and systems for residential and/or building applications. In this role, the candidate will work alongside technology, product development and manufacturing/quality engineers to ensure successful production release.

The candidate will have responsibility for the following in addition to adhoc assignments as needed.
Develop physics-based thermo-fluid dynamic models of HVAC&R components and systems.
Perform dynamic model calibration, validation, and physics-based analysis of system behaviors.
Provide expertise in heat transfer, thermodynamics and thermal management system analysis in the development of next generation high efficiency and environmentally friendly HVAC&R and energy systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve numerical issues in dynamic simulations of ordinary differential equation (ODE) /differential-algebraic equations (DAE) systems.
Partner with product development, component suppliers and Technology & Methods groups to understand and translate design and performance requirements into component, sub-system and system thermal system models (both steady-state and dynamic (full transient)) to characterize & optimize system thermal performance and provide robust dynamic models for HVAC control algorithm development.
Coaches, reviews, and delegates MBD work to lower level professionals.
LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Complete discrete MBD tasks to meet design and project objectives
Design thermodynamic system or sub system with minimal guidance
Apply expert knowledge of Mechanical and Systems engineering
May manage moderately sized projects or processes.
Perform as subject-matter expert within MBD (thermal system modeling) discipline.
Making moderate to significant improvements of processes, systems or products to enhance performance of MBD workflows.
Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.
Strong participation in thermal system modeling innovation and integration projects
TYPICAL EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
PhD degree in Mechanical/ Aerospace Engineering with 15 + years of applicable experience.
Experience & Qualifications
Heat transfer and two-phase flow expertise and thermodynamic cycle analytical skills.
Experience with vapor-compression refrigeration or power generation systems including related components: heat exchangers and compression technologies.
Understands the fundamentals of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics
Understands systems & controls engineering fundamentals
Experience with model based design processes
Software programming experience
Experience with design optimization approaches
Design of experiments and data analysis technique knowledge
Good communication skills and team working experience
Expertise in model development software tools like Modelica/Dymola (or equivalent 1D Transient
Analysis Codes) is a strong differentiator.
Modeling and optimization of thermo-fluid systems and components to improve efficiency
Ability to create physics-based models with numerical procedures for steady-state and dynamic simulation at different level of fidelity
Expertise in HVAC fault detection and diagnosis (FDD)
Expertise in Matlab, VBA or C++, and Python, Simtools/SET, EES.
Experience in thermo-fluid system control development and model validation
OTHER KEY QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with diverse audiences including cross functional team members, senior leaders, global suppliers, and external customers including service managers and technicians.
Self-starter with ability to learn quickly & Organized with strong attention to detail
Experience working in a team environment
