Organizational Unit Summary:
FIO operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with 30 institutions and agencies engaged in marine research, education and resources management, including all 12 public universities providing collaborating opportunities across academia, government, and private sector for educational, training, research and public outreach opportunities for students and scientists across Florida.
FIO has two major sea-going vessels, the R/V Hogarth and R/V Weatherbird II, along with the land based Keys Marine Laboratory in Layton, Florida providing science and education capabilities. These platforms have supported over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students statewide since 2009, allowing students to connect first-hand with scientific research conducted along Florida's coast.
The Marine Chief Engineer(s) primary function is to perform routine and preventative maintenance and repair on all systems of research vessel(s) in port or at sea.
Repair and maintain main diesel engines and ship service generators, air compressors and various pumps, motors and equipment aboard marine vessels at sea and in port. Install, repair, maintain all equipment aboard marine vessels, including but not limited to: hydraulic, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, firefighting, fuel, pneumatic and damage control systems at sea and in port. Assists with routine shipboard maintenance in port including de-scaling and painting and operating portable hand and power tools.
Adequately train and mentor the Assistant Engineer. Properly carry out all administrative and log keeping functions related to the Engineering department. Assist with launching and recovery of over-the-side scientific equipment as needed using cranes, winches, nets, small boats, etc.
Position may assist Captain or Mate with routine tasks involved with watchkeeping during conditions of acclimate weather, may also support deck department in operation of necessary equipment to facilitate scientific mission, including line, winch, and anchor handling, small boat operation, fueling, energizing and securing machinery on a non-stable platform in all types of weather. While in-port, position will perform daily and routine maintenance of mechanical equipment and structure of vessel(s) and perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and or designee.
This position requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program in marine services technician repair or a high school diploma or equivalent, and four years of experience operating, maintaining, and repairing engines and other systems on marine vessels.
Certifications or Licensure
A valid driver’s license and U.S. passport are required. Within three months of hire, incumbent must obtain the following certifications: Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping, Basic Safety Training (STCW-95, BST); first aid; and CPR.
Previous experience in the maritime industry is desired. Experience working in academia environment with students and researchers. Certifications for Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping, Basic Safety Training (STCW-95, BST); first aid; CPR and TWIC card.
Other Information for candidates:
Employment is contingent upon a successful background check and pre-employment screenings must meet university standards. FIO is a member of the APCA Drug Consortium, final candidates will also be subject to random screenings to be in compliant with 46 CFR 16.210 and university policies/regulations.
