The PRedictive Integrated Structural Materials Science (PRISMS) Center at University of Michigan is seeking a computational materials scientist to be the lead developer of the PRISMS-PF open source framework for phase field modeling and to apply PRISMS-PF to investigate the effects of microstructure in magnesium alloys. Depending on the level of experience, this research faculty position will be at the Research Investigator or Assistant Research Scientist level. These positions offer attractive benefits and competitive salaries commensurate with qualifications.
The PRISMS Center is a Department of Energy Software Innovation Center focused on developing and demonstrating an open-source Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) framework. The Center's work is threefold: code development, integrated experimental and computational investigations of magnesium alloys (“use cases”), and the development of a materials data repository. The codes being developed by the Center include DFT-FE (a finite-element-based density functional theory), CASM (statistical mechanics), PRISMS-PF (phase field), PRISMS-Plasticity (crystal and continuum plasticity), prisms.multiscale (multi-scale integration and optimization), and Materials Commons (materials data repository framework). Current use cases focus on complex alloy optimization, corrosion, grain boundary strengthening, and fatigue.

Conduct research on microstructural evolution in magnesium alloys and the effects of microstructure on material properties
Lead the development of PRISMS-PF, including managing contributions from internal and external developers
Assist in the development of linkages between PRISMS-PF and other PRISMS tools (i.e. simulation codes, experiments, the data repository)
Write professional-level documentation and user manuals for PRISMS-PF and related tools
Lead training events and perform customer support in person and online
Work with research staff, faculty, and students in a tightly knit team environment
Author peer reviewed papers and represent the Center via technical presentations in workshops and conferences
Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, physics, or a related field
One or both of the following:
Strong background in the development and use of phase field models
Strong background in finite element code development, particularly using the deal.II finite element library
Demonstrated experience developing scientific software using one of more of the following languages: C++, Fortran, Python
Experience in developing and optimizing codes for massively parallel high-performance computing systems that use MPI communication
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including an accomplished publication record
Ability to work independently as well as in a variety of team structures
At least one year post-doctoral research or equivalent
Experience with both phase field modeling and the finite element method code development
Knowledge of physical metallurgy
Experience with modern software development practices, including version control, continuous integration testing, unit testing, and documentation
Experience managing a software development project on GitHub
Expertise with advanced visualization software (e.g. VisIt, ParaView)
Expertise with parallel profiling and debugging tools (e.g. Allinea MAP, Allinea DDT)
Experience using automated code documentation software (e.g. Doxygen)
Understanding of computational techniques complimentary to phase field modeling, including uncertainty quantification, verification and validation, optimization, and machine learning
Experience with CALPHAD software such as Thermo-Calc and Pandat
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
