Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities — we're just getting started.
We believe that anyone, anywhere can contribute to Facebook by understanding the backbone of our company and immersing themselves in the people and platforms that keep our users, advertisers and employees happy and engaged. To this end, we’ve created Facebook University for Operations (FBU Ops), a unique, 8-week summer internship program to provide an inside look at Facebook’s non-engineering roles, while offering training and work experience in the technology sector. The program is designed to provide early career exposure to students who are historically underrepresented in the technology field.
Here are some examples of Global Operations teams that FBU Ops interns might work with:
Product Operations (Product Development Specialist or Product Specialist):
Product Development Specialist:
PDS is all about processes – it is Operations to a T. You should be interested in operational efficiency and automation. A baseline knowledge of SQL for PDS is required. An example of a project would be looking at a team’s current bug volume, building tools to automate feedback, finding a way to more efficiently funnel tasks to the right engineer, and then displaying the data for an engineering team to track progress and maintain accountability.
As a PS, the role is more about the ability to frame ambiguous problems, define the relevant data, and dig in to surface root causes. Genuine product curiosity is important, as is the ability to make a data-driven case to product teams. An example might be a product team that notices people are sending fewer direct messages on Instagram, but doesn’t know why. A Product Specialist would dive into our bug reporting tool to analyze user reports and search for bugs or complaints that could be correlated. You would look for spikes of related issues and advocate for our users to ensure Engineering addresses the highest impact issues.
Product Data Operations:
The PDO team plays a critical role in product development at Facebook. The team provides data and insights that power machine learning and AI at the core of all Facebook products. The team partners closely with product and provides the human operational rigor required to develop some of the most advanced technology at Facebook. As a member of the PDO team, you are responsible for managing Data Labeling and Annotation programs end-to-end (including scoping, defining strategies for robust data collection at scale, sourcing and managing content reviewers to build datasets that support Product and Engineering, collecting and analyzing results); working cross-functionally to improve existing Data Labeling and Annotation projects; proactively surfacing insights and providing recommendations for product improvement; actively engaging with colleagues and partners to enhance operational processes across the organization. You will be required to showcase excellent leadership, project management, problem solving, and communication to both internal and external colleagues at scale.
Intellectual Property Operations:
Responsible for Facebook’s intellectual property reports and procedures, the associated complex legal issues, and the changing landscape of free speech on the Internet. This team is passionate about building trust and giving the most voice to the most people. Projects on this team could range from working to better understand and improve our operational infrastructure, to helping translate legal and policy interpretations to actionable guidance for the team. We also play a key role in building out IP support for new products and the changing legal landscape, so work related to new launches may be included.
North America Market Operations:
Focuses on supporting our users through both direct support interactions as well as scalable solutions. We work to prevent harmful experiences by researching abuse on the platform and advocate for change on behalf of our community. Those who join our teams are very passionate about solving people’s issues and are strong advocates for the Facebook community. Note: This position is located in our Austin, TX office and may address sensitive content issues, including but not limited to graphic images, videos and writings, offensive or derogatory language, and other objectionable material.
