The USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) is funded by a fee-for-service business model and supports the USGS nation-wide hydrologic monitoring program by maintaining a large stock of calibrated and quality assured equipment. The warehouse stock covers approximately 80% of the equipment needs of the USGS Water Science Centers nationwide.
As an Engineering Technician within the Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility, some of your specific duties will include:
Manages all aspects of the Special Buying Program by evaluating needs from the water science centers.
Receives and reviews requests for equipment purchases related to hydrologic instrumentation.
Provides technical expertise to customers and contracting staff regarding suitability of hydrologic instrumentation to meet technical need.
Work with designers, other engineers, technicians, and representatives of manufacturers and vendors to complete projects.
The work is primarily sedentary, although occasional field trips may be required to evaluate equipment installations. The incumbent spends most of her work time at a computer terminal.
Work is generally performed within a controlled office environment.
Occasional travel - Overnight travel of up to 1 night per month may be required.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you may be required to provide proof of a valid State license and a copy of your driving record.

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify at the GS-11 level:
Possess at least 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of the position to be filled and that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes collecting, analyzing, engineering data, calibrating, adjusting, maintaining analytical scientific instrumentation, negotiating contracts and performing project management.
**OR Possess 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. in a directly related field of study.
**OR Possess a combination of appropriate specialized experience as described and appropriate graduate level education as described that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.
