This unique opportunity is part of the Additive Manufacturing Center and Sheet Metal Fabrication Group, which produces highly complex prototype and flight parts for JPL's spacecraft missions.
Some Challenges You Will Tackle:
Hands on operation of Additive Manufacturing (AM) machines.
Perform materials characterization to determine mechanical, chemical, thermal and/or optical properties of AM materials.
Perform analysis, characterization, simulation, test and/or verification of AM hardware.
Collaborate with cognizant engineers/scientists to develop and recommend design modifications for AM.
Advise on materials, machines and process parameters to build parts that meet flight and non-flight specifications.
Evaluate the latest advancements in AM; assess the machines and process standards for both polymers and metals suitable for JPL applications.
Support the process of locating, evaluating, and establishing new vendors as a laboratory resource for AM fabrication.
Participate in "Make or Buy" decisions and provide oversight for selected vendors.
Utilize multiple modules in the Oracle Discrete Manufacturing suite of programs, to develop the implementation plan for the work, estimate WIP, the technical progress of the work and resolve any technical, cost or schedule issues as they arise.
Act as Contract Technical Manager, collaborating with acquisition and subcontractors, regarding out of house fabrication requirements.
You Must Have:
Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 3 years of related experience or a Master’s degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 1 years of related experience or a PhD with 0 years of related experience.
Experience in operating Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) machines.
Process knowledge for metal AM to make successful builds in titanium alloys.
Proficient in using the Magics and other software focusing on design for AM and build-file preparation.
Knowledge and application of post printing processes for metal 3D printed parts, such as heat treatment schedules, surface finishing, and powder removal.
Experience in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM)
Proficient in using engineering and analysis tools and software, i.e. UG/NX or other CAD tools (Pro/E, Solidworks, nTopology).
Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers/customers concerning feasibility, design, and evaluation of complex hardware.
Excellent verbal and written communication, computer skills and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

A minimum of 2 years prior experience developing, designing and fabricating parts for flight applications.
Prior experience in an AM shop environment, specializing in 3D printing operation and maintenance of AM machines including metal 3D printing, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Polyjet, lost wax castings and multi-jet-modeling
Process knowledge for metal AM to make successful builds in aluminum and steel alloys
Process knowledge for polymer AM to make successful builds
Knowledge of AM metal powders and the recycling process for re-use.
Experience in operating Direct Energy Deposition (DED) machines
Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Experience with optical scanning for evaluating AM hardware
Experience in spacecraft mechanical systems development including structures, mechanisms or robotics.
Proven ability to take verbal and incomplete design elements and recommending to engineering personnel solutions for the manufacture and assembly of prototype hardware.
Generate engineering documentation of standards and practices, requirements, progress, and analyses of AM produced hardware
Publish own work at conference proceedings and publications
Highly energized, self-motivated, with the ability to work on several assignments that are complex in nature using considerable practical judgment.
Knowledge of Oracle Discrete Manufacturing modules including; estimating, bills of materials, routers, scheduling, resource allocation, and Work In Process (WIP) monitoring
