In our people, we above all value kindness, a scout mindset, a focus on improvement, and prioritising to get the right things done. We aim to help build one of the most transformative technologies in the world, with massive social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we are actively striving to have a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
Fathom Radiant is looking for a mechanical engineer who can lead and contribute to the development of our high-precision optical system. The ideal candidate will have experience designing optical components in a multidisciplinary environment, understanding how to evaluate tradeoffs between manufacturability, cost, thermal, mechanical, electrical and optical performance and reliability. At Fathom Radiant, you will work closely with teams of mechanical engineers, packaging engineers, optical lens designers and optoelectronic device designers. You will lead the effort from concept through manufacturing.
Areas of Contribution
Work closely with Fathom Radiant's various technical teams to enable unique and novel optoelectronic-electronic integrated systems
Lead requirements definition, design, simulation and prototyping of the optical components for Fathom’s optical-electronic computer system, with components ranging from micro-optics mounts to micro-positioning systems to precision connectors.
Design for environmental robustness (NVH, thermal, etc.) and reliability
Prototype mechanical components and systems, analyze optical stability and performance in operation
Analyze mechanical tolerance impact on optical performance at the component and system level
Work closely with manufacturing partners to understand constraints and capabilities of manufacturing and automated assembly; design for manufacturing
Transition prototype designs to volume manufacturing
Requirements for this role
B.S., MS, or PhD in physics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum 3 years experience in opto-mechanical engineering.
Experience with precision mechanism design and assembly, error budgeting/tolerance stackup, GD&T and design for manufacturing and assembly.
Experience with 3D CAD/CAM and finite element analysis (FEA) including thermal analysis
Experience with precision optical attach and alignment
Experience with optical fiber connectors
Knowledge of optical materials, stress, thermal coefficient, expansion,
Experience in opto-mechanical system design: design, simulation, fabrication, and testing
Experience designing opto-mechanical systems for imaging systems
Experience with micro-optics
Experience with systems that combine lenslets with traditional lenses
Familiarity or experience with wavefront measurement metrology
Experience with optical ray tracing software (Zemax, Code V, etc.)
Experience leading and managing engineering projects
Experience working with and managing contract manufacturers for component manufacturing and system assembly
You'll do well here if...
You're motivated to build something that hasn’t been built before
You're kind, enjoy thoughtful discussions fueled by problem-solving and logic, and care about our mission to positively influence the trajectory of artificial intelligence
You find large challenges exciting and enjoy discovering and defining problems as much as solving them.
You deliver. You may enjoy thoughtful conversations about problems and perfecting designs, but in the end, you know that what matters is delivering a manufacturable solution that works every time.
You are a cross-disciplinary team member. You are excited to work with and learn from software, mechanical, electrical, and optics engineers. You are comfortable communicating across teams.
