The purpose of the Tesla Materials Engineering organization is to facilitate the Tesla mission of accelerating the world to sustainable transportation via identification, development and insertion of advanced materials and processes while supporting other Tesla Engineering and Manufacturing functions with materials expertise.
The team is seeking a Polymer Materials Engineer to focus paint and coatings system. This position will be partnered with our current Paint Materials Engineers to manage paint and coating systems for Tesla. This role will work at our Fremont, California engineering center and the Fremont factory.
Develop and validate new paint and coatings systems including cleaning, pre-treatment, E-coat, base-coat, and top-coat.
Support paint manufacturing in developing and optimizing paint processes.
Respond to manufacturing issues and provide materials or process-based solutions.
Provide technical support to the quality and manufacturing teams with respect to material processing..
Support process validation for all new coating processes.
Work with suppliers and Tesla manufacturing teams to develop new paint processing technologies that reduce energy consumption, capital equipment expenses, and floor space requirements. Lead these efforts from concept to production.
Polymer, Coatings or Materials Engineering degree. Bachelors degree with relevant intern or co-op experience required. Masters degree preferred.
Fundamental knowledge of polymers and polymer chemistry
Experience with standard analytical tools (FTIR, DSC, Rheometry, DMA, etc.)
Strong communication and organizational skills with ability to manage projects independently
