Our Prosthetic Engineering research and design team seeks a mechanical engineer eager to make a positive difference in the lives of people with lower-limb loss. Our group has a 25-year history of creating new sensing modalities for prosthetists and amputee patients, most of them involving portable sensors for field use. Data from our systems provide key insight to clinicians treating amputee patients, and provide feedback signals to automated control systems that adjust prosthetic sockets during use so as to maintain fit, function, and high-level performance.
We are a 15-person interdisciplinary group of bioengineers, clinicians, mechanical and electrical engineers and software specialists. The research is focused on development and implementation of novel measurement techniques for external prosthetics. The goal of the projects is to create instruments to help practitioners better understand patient prosthetic fit problems and select treatments to improve function and quality of life.
This is an mechanical/biomechanical engineering position. The position relies on strong and practical design skills and requires good organizational ability. The mechanical engineer needs to effectively collaborate with lab personnel and be detail oriented in design, development, and testing. The position applies knowledge of practical design and related skills to create effective devices that help test hypotheses and draw conclusions from collected data. Designs may lead to commercial medical products. The person in this position will work with the PI, faculty, staff, research associates, and students.
Mechanical Device Design and Prototyping:
Work with electrical engineers, bioengineers, and clinicians to develop sensing systems and prosthetic devices that meet project objectives
Conduct all aspects of innovative mechanical design and prototyping including CAD modeling, drawing packages, electronic integration, fabrication, 3D printing and carbon fiber fabrication
Calibration and testing:
Conduct and develop engineering bench tests on mechanisms using bench test apparatus
Present performance results and calibrations from bench testing
Work with research group to develop human subjects testing protocols
Conduct scientific studies with human participants with extreme attention to detail. Perform data collection and technology characterization of effectiveness
Manage inventory and purchasing of electronic and mechanical components
Support laboratory functions in fast paced environment through auxiliary tasks as needed
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related science or engineering discipline
Minimum of two years job-related experience in a research or industry setting
Experience in mechanical engineering and design
CAD software and drawing package creation experience
Demonstrated ability to execute a complex project with high attention to detail
Ability to independently prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines; ability to seek help
Willingness and ability to learn new systems and to implement new processes in response to changes
Capability to work well with a team of interdisciplinary engineers and practitioners
Ability to work with diverse population of amputee volunteers running scientific studies.
Experience conducting biomechanical projects
Capability to write manuscript-quality description of analysis methods and results
Experience in Autodesk Inventor
Experience with 3D scanning and point cloud and surface CAD modeling
