The Automation Engineer will an expert in industrial automation and a technical subject matter expert improving our lines and processes through automation of equipment..
Critical Success Criteria:
Work with internal and external partners to develop machine design concepts and robotic technologies
Collaborating with operations leadership to lead the research and selection of current and new technologies, applications, and design alternatives that will have the highest potential impact on plant productivity
Designing and executing plans to effectively commission and evaluate these current and new technologies and processes in a timely manner.
Developing systems and measures that appropriately assess the performance of automation initiatives, analyzing results, and providing appropriate recommendations to plant leadership to drive strategic business decisions.
Provide general supervision of contractors for projects.
Implement complex design concepts and ideas into working models, drawings, and P&IDs
Ensure effective and timely project completion by regularly monitoring progress, coordinating activities, and resolving roadblocks
Assist operations with the implementation of new plant processes
Monitor and report on the achievement of targets, and revise strategies as needed
Prepare detailed engineering reports and make recommendations
Control project costs within approved expenditures.
Interface with outside business partners and clients as necessary
Develop and maintain expertise on plant-wide processes and equipment
Develop understanding on proposed local, State and Federal regulations applicable to operations
Assess automation opportunities and help create innovative equipment designs to solve complex problems
Provide hands-on support for troubleshooting equipment
Provide technical guidance, problem solving and advice to others in the team and stakeholders
Remain current on the latest developments in automation technologies and incorporate it into new initiatives
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering from accredited College or University
2-5 years of previous relevant engineering experience
Strong mechanical aptitude and a problem solving mindset
Previous experience with project management
Self-directed nature with ability to multitask, prioritize, manage time, and meet deadlines
Excellent soft skills including team collaboration, interpersonal rapport, communication, and conflict resolution
Diligence with safety protocols and recognizing potential hazards
Technical proficiency with MS Office, particularly MS Excel for use in preparing reports and documents
Capable of lifting 30 lbs and standing for extended durations when performing plant-based test work with or without reasonable accommodation
Capable of wearing respiratory protection and other PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, boots, hearing protection) in hot work environment up to 8 hours per day
Previous engineering experience within heavy industrial operations strongly preferred, but not required
Experience with mechanical and electrical drawings and design software packages preferred, but not required
PLC programming and Robot programming skills preferred, but not required
