Through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) this posting seeks an additive manufacturing postdoctoral or post-master's researcher for high-temperature ceramic component fabrication at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
NETL is presently developing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generators capable of extracting energy directly from high-velocity oxy-fuel combustion gases. The post-graduate researcher will be a part of an interdisciplinary team developing a prototype MHD generator at NETL, taking an active part in designing and fabricating ceramic components for use in the MHD channel through additive manufacturing.
Additive manufacturing is an active area of research for materials engineering, with many different approaches to fabricate components with complex geometries and graded compositions that are not attainable through other means. The fabrication of engineering ceramics through additive manufacturing, including the high-temperature components found in MHD generators, poses a significant technological challenge due to the need to burn out and fire parts, which sets it apart from 3D printing of plastic and metal parts.
The candidate will take an active role in the project by devising experiments, performing measurements in the laboratory, and communicating research findings through publications and presentations. Research goals include the fabrication and testing of ceramic electrode and insulator components at NETL’s Albany site in Oregon. Candidates should have excellent communication skills and laboratory experience relevant to the attainment of these near-term goals.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the following:
1. Operate a desktop stereolithography 3D printer and a proprietary ceramic-resin system for fabricating test coupons and components for the MHD generator and learn to collaborate with other researchers as a part of a team to characterize the material properties of the 3D-printed component from its initial post-printing state through the final fired state.
2. Gain experience collaborating with an interdisciplinary team by participating in the research and development process: sharing knowledge of 3D printing of parts with complex geometries or high-temperature ceramic material properties relevant to MHD generator design
3. Improve effectiveness as a communicator by sharing scientific knowledge with other researchers in writing and through public speaking: to this end, the participant is expected to serve as the primary author for at least one paper submitted to a scientific journal and speak at least one scientific conference.
Ideal candidates will have:
1. Completed course work in ceramics engineering, materials engineering, or mechanical engineering as a part of the applicant's dissertation research
2. Knowledge of ceramics processing and experience material property characterization methods
3. Proficiency with 3-D printing or additive manufacturing software and hardware, particularly 3D stereolithography printing
4. Experience with CAD/CAM software
5. Strong verbal and written English communication skills
6. Demonstrated experience in conducting scientific research and publishing results
