The incumbent must have a strong knowledge of
continuous casting and steelmaking processes with focus on process development
for improved steel surface and internal quality. The incumbent will work in the
SSAB state-of-the-art Research and Development facility located in the
Muscatine, Iowa.


Perform water-modeling experiments to optimize flow patterns in the tundish and mold in order to improve the surface and internal quality of steel.

Perform CFD modeling of steel behavior in metallurgical vessels during casting to
compliment water-modeling experiments.

Work with mill metallurgists and operations personnel to conduct trials, and
developing practices for improvement of steelmaking and continuous casting

Investigate root causes of any quality issues related to steelmaking and continuous casting
processes using available equipment in the research and development facility.

Write technical reports to document findings from investigation of quality issues.


The incumbent will research activities related to improving steel surface and
internal quality, and product development at the SSAB Americas R&D Facility.

The position reports to the Director, Research and Development and has a close
working relationship with other R&D staff, Technical Services, Applications
Engineering, and Operations personnel.



MSc. in Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with at least three years of experience in the steel industry, particularly in relation to the continuous
casting process.

Strong analytical capabilities

Strong written and verbal communication skills


PhD. In Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or
a related discipline.

Educational background in material science, and a good
knowledge of steelmaking and refining processes.

Experience in using lab equipment such as polishing machine, optical microscope and

Proficient in using programmable languages and development of mathematical models.
