This position is responsible for researching, testing, developing standards and providing technical advice relating to engineering automation, specifically as it relates to survey and design principles and software, design implementation and professional-of-record matters.
As the successful candidate in this role, you will work with engineering data formats and related hardware and software, engineering automation concepts, operational features of automated machinery and effective sharing of data between systems as it relates to the automation of engineering activities.
Included in the scope of engineering automation is automated machine guidance, control processes and related activities (collectively referred to as AMG) used in support of incorporating digital 3D design information into transportation improvement projects.

A day in the life:
Research software, hardware, and equipment for engineering automation efforts. You will work with the following groups:
Agency subject matter experts.
Industry professionals including software, hardware and equipment vendors.
Local, state and national transportation peers.
Work with the Engineering Automation Team.
Develop standard agency procedures for creating, distributing and utilizing 3D design and AMG data.
Establish best practices and guidelines for 3D design, AMG workflows and other engineering automation.
Serve as a technical resource and arbitrator in resolving technological and procedural obstacles to 3D design, automated machine guidance, and other engineering automation initiatives.
Provide training and direct support relating to engineering automation including:
ODOT’s Virtual Highway Corridor system administration and agency use.
Techniques and workflows that facilitate downstream use of data for 3D design, automated machine guidance and other engineering automation initiatives.
Create engineering data that supports AMG workflows and other engineering automation.
Support and administer contracts that involve engineering automation data types and formats provided by ODOT for engineering automation and expectations of ODOT for appropriate use of such data.
Requires performing outdoor activities that may include working around heavy equipment in difficult terrain and inclement weather.
Periodic statewide travel is required and there is potential for occasional out of state travel.
Working on active construction sites and around a variety of heavy equipment to assist with machine guidance and other engineering automation.
Navigating potentially tense situations involved while troubleshooting engineering automation glitches, mediating conflicts over automation applications, guiding ODOT staff in administration of contacts involving engineering automation all under potentially pressing timelines.

What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.
Note: "Valid" means you have the ability to stamp. We will verify your license before we consider your application. If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain professional registration in the state of Oregon within six months of hire.
You will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity with a wide variety of engineering design activities.
Working knowledge of automated design equipment, GNSS static and real-time kinematic surveying.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
Working knowledge of CADD, road design and survey software.
Working knowledge of digital terrain modeling, engineering alignments and coordinate systems.

The fine print:

This is a limited duration appointment that is expected to end on or before November 30, 2020. Limited duration appointments are benefits eligible and have a designated maximum length of service. This position has the potential to become permanent.
We may also fill this position as a rotational assignment open to current State of Oregon employees. Because this is a licensed position, rotational candidates must meet the minimum qualifications.
Job Rotation Details
This opportunity is scheduled to last until November 30, 2020, but could change based on business needs.

The sponsoring work unit will provide funding for this assignment.
The successful candidate will remain eligible for cost-of-living increases and regular salary adjustments, as applicable, and will remain in his/her permanent classification and salary range.
The successful candidate may be eligible for work out of class compensation within this classification's salary range.
Relocation and per diem will not be paid.
Upon completion of this assignment, employee will return to his/her permanent position.
The assignment can be terminated at any time, by either party, without prejudice.
