We are looking for an experienced Camera Hardware Engineer with responsibilities for characterization, validation, and benchmarking of sensors used in HoloLens and other Microsoft products. As part of the Mixed Reality organization, the Sensor Team is responsible for design, characterization, and integration of sensor subsystems including camera modules, inertial motion sensors, environmental sensors, and more.
This position will have an emphasis on camera sensor module design and validation testing. The engineering deliverables must meet performance, cost, reliability, and mass production requirements for the product. This role is focused on designing new and innovative solutions as well as utilizing highly customized test equipment for performance validation. Strong knowledge and understanding of part design for specific fabrication processes, materials, and design for assembly are required for the role.
Implementing known solutions toward new technical and/or design challenges that may involve multiple technical variables (e.g., size reduction, performance improvement) and provides guidance to other team members.
Work across functional teams including program management, mechanical engineering, optical engineering, and software.
Being familiar with all aspects of ME design from early requirements gathering, accessing solution space of options, architecting, CAD, characterization, and production
Supplier engagement- access supplier capabilities, provide SOW requirements, participate in weekly technical discussions with suppliers, and work with cross-functional engineering teams to develop manufacturing processes at the contract manufacturer
Use predictive modeling techniques (e.g., tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Design for Six Sigma) to inform design choices for a well-defined feature or product
Understand optical systems and tolerances (lens system, camera system, etc.)
Work closely with the engineering and PM team for camera module design and roadmaps
Understand and refine existing highly customized test equipment for performance validation
Understanding of how to clearly specify dimensions and measurement requirements that can be used in statistical analyses to evaluate product cost and quality
Understand device specifications and interprets details required to design and test various hardware features
Use root cause analysis to identify complex problems or flaws that may affect a feature or product design change. Identify possible solutions and bring them to the attention of other engineers or team leads
MSME with 6+ years or BSME with 8+ years in product development from initial concepts to mass production
Proven experience in 3D CAD design and detailed drawings (ProE, Solidworks)
Hands-on experience prototyping mechanical and/or opto-mechanical setups and custom test measurement systems
Experience in validation testing of camera modules for mechanical and optical performance across a variety of environmental conditions.
Understanding of and experience with compact camera module designs.
Finite Element Analysis or other simulation skills for modeling forces, deformation, and thermal performance
Understand range of mechanical manufacturing processes including related tolerances, costs, and lead times
Demonstrated problem-solving and communication skills as well as the ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and independently
Detail oriented communication skills with the ability to work with stakeholders across multiple functions
Logical and creative thinker
Knowledgeable in properties of and experience with selection of engineering materials
Understanding of optical principles is a strong plus
Demonstrated ability to design custom mechanical solutions in an efficient, producible manner
