This position is for an engineering intern to aid in the design, documentation, assembly, and testing of TCI’s flagship active and passive harmonic filter product lines. As an engineering intern you will work hands-on in CAD, structural analysis, thermal analysis, prototype development, prototype testing, product troubleshooting, and engineering documentation of our magnetic and power electronic products. Strong skills in mechanical design, with knowledge of electrical or electronic products a plus. Knowledge of and interest in power electrical and electronic circuits desired.
Desire to work in the factory with manufacturing associates solving problems, providing fabrication guides, and improving documentation.
Exposure to structural design and FEA analysis as well as thermal design and electronics cooling analysis preferred.
The ability and willingness to take independent action and complete job tasks. Also the willingness to seek out additional assignments. The desire to take full ownership of all assigned task and complete them in an efficient, timely manner.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Additional Desired Competencies
Knowledge of design tools like Inventor (3D) and FEA programs.
Knowledge of assembly level hand tools, hands on experience assembling products. Knowledge of manufacturing processes including winding, assembly, torqueing, welding, and crimping.
Strong troubleshooting skills and familiarity with 480V power laboratory safety and test methodologies.
Ability to operate typical lab diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multi meters, thermocouple instrumentation, IR temperature probes, differential pressure meters, air velocity meters, and bench power supplies.
Knowledge of power electronic cooling design including heat sinks, forced convection, natural convection, and thermal testing. Electrical design knowledge including low inductance considerations and avoiding inductive heating.
Familiarity with design of sheet metal and plastic parts.
Organized and methodical to work with approval agency engineers during product approval projects.
Job responsibilities will be partially driven by qualifications and area of interest expressed by student but typical tasks will include – design of new parts and assemblies, validation of new enclosure design structural integrity, thermal analysis of electrical enclosures, prototype lab thermal testing to validate product cooling capabilities, heat sink testing to support new designs, testing to support cost reductions including the elimination of fans, analysis of thermal systems, development of enclosure cooling design spreadsheets, and assembly of prototype products on the shop floor.
The engineering intern will be expected to learn how to safely operate power lab equipment including motor dynes in order to test mechanical product changes. Additionally the job may require construction of prototype circuits and test fixtures as needed by the engineering team.
Students will be exposed to all or some of the following tools and technologies: Inventor, PSIM, MathCAD, project documentation WIKIs, analog circuits, power converter hardware, and industrial induction motor drives.
The job will require the ability to work safely in a high voltage power lab under the guidance of qualified lab personnel.
Basic Qualifications for Consideration
Current enrollment at an accredited college or university engineering program (UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison or equivalent).
Prefer a Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on design or power and energy conversion and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
TCI's internships generally start at a summer & semester long, but can be continued, and can lead to full time offers of employment in the future.
