We are continuing to accept applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Civil Engineer. The Public Works Department with the City of Ventura has two (2) Civil Engineer vacancies we are looking to fill immediately.
This professional Engineer classification series is flexibly staffed, and positions may be filled at any level depending on the needs of the City and the qualifications of the candidate. This is a continuous recruitment, and the resulting eligible list will be used to fill future vacancies within the Assistant/Associate/Civil Engineer classifications during the life of the eligible list.
Engineering Services Division
The Engineering Services Division is looking for an energetic and results driven engineer to join the Engineering Services team. The successful candidate will have responsibilities in the roles of floodplain management, capital plan coordination, pavement management, dredging, permitting, special projects, and coastal resiliency within the Public Works Department. Some key responsibilities of this position are:
Coordinate and assist in producing the City’s 6-year Capital Plan.
Support all pavement management function to include the utilization of StreetSaver as the City’s Pavement Management Program.
Support the City’s Floodplain Administrator with evaluating and coordinating all floodplain responsibilities for the City.
Develop a Coastal Resiliency plan and assist with the development of a Local Coastal Program and the update to the City’s General Plan.
Support all dredging activities by working with the Ventura Port District and City consultant services.
Support the City on special projects such as Surfers Point Managed Retreat.
Ventura Water Department
The Public Works Department is looking for a professional engineer to support the Ventura Water Department. This position will serve as liaison with the Engineering Design and Construction Division on issues related to the design and construction of water and wastewater capital projects. The position will also serve as liaison with the Engineering Services Division on issues related to the available capacity of the City's water and sewer systems. This position will help in the determination of future demands on the City's water and wastewater system and develops related water resource plans to address future needs. The position will coordinate the review process and evaluate development projects, regional plans, proposed water facilities, and their requirements. This position will also be responsible for performing plan checking related to capital projects to ensure that operational and regulatory requirements are incorporated into the plans and meet current requirements. Additionally, this position will review and respond to water and sewer service requests.
The ideal candidate for these positions has experience effectively managing multiple projects, ensuring quality work, while remaining conscientious of schedules and budgets; is team-oriented and able to interact with people throughout the City, both cooperatively and collaboratively; has engineering design experience in a municipal or county public works department or special purpose district, specifically in water or wastewater projects; has exemplary customer service standards and can establish effective working relationships; has experience managing and administering public construction projects and contracts; and possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.

A combination of training, education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor s degree in Civil, Structural, Traffic or Transportation Engineering, or a related field, and depending on assignment, qualifying experience as described below, in civil, traffic, construction, transportation engineering, water resource planning, or architectural/structural plans review or structural design are required, as follows:
Assistant Engineer: One year of professional engineering experience in the assigned area. A California Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate and two years of college may substitute for the bachelor's degree. A California Engineering-in-Training certificate is highly desirable.
Associate Engineer: Three years of professional engineering experience in the assigned area, preferably with a public agency, OR two years of experience equivalent to that of an Assistant Engineer with the City of Ventura are required. A California Engineering-in-Training certificate is highly desirable.
Civil Engineer: Three years of professional engineering experience in the assigned area, preferably with a public agency. Registration as a California Civil Engineer is required at time of appointment.

Probationary Period: Six monthsDeferred Compensation: The City contributes $168 per year to a 457 plan and will match $1,650 per year contributed by the employee, for a total benefit of $1,818 per year.Medical & Dental Insurance: Up to $665 monthly towards a selection of plans. Medical and dental insurance is effective the first of the second month after date of hire. Optional Benefits: $495 monthly, which may be applied toward medical insurance premiums. Cash-out option is not available. Vision Insurance: City paid coverage provided for employees and dependents.
