The Research Engineer in the Metalworking COI NA Laboratory focuses on the research and study of the action of Metalworking fluids in metal machining. Included in this focus is the study of material structure and properties being machined. This position reports to the Sr. Manager of Global MWF
Conduct research to study and understanding the impact of product chemistry on mechanical operations and machining results. This includes internal research projects as well as customer related projects.
Investigate metal/material structure and properties as they relate to machinability in different manufacturing operations. This including the use of mechanical testing, as well as optical and scanning electron microscopy.
Writing of comprehensive technical reports, and preparation of technical presentations for internal as well as external use.
Attends courses and enhances learning of new technology.
Help keep laboratory clean and all equipment in good working order.
Position requires the safe handling of hazardous materials and requires the ability to lift 5-gallon pails and other heavy objects.
May attend Field support Trial Demonstrations and Application problem-solving at Customer locations in support of NPD.
Education, Experience & Training:
This position requires at least a Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Industrial, Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering are preferred). Also must have some college course work in chemistry sufficient to enable the study and understanding of the impact of product chemistry on mechanical operations and machining results.
Knowledge of principles and operation of scanning electron microscope as well as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscope. Working knowledge of CAD-CAM software and working knowledge of numerical computing software (eg. MatLab). Working analysis of principles and application of statistical analysis and experimental design techniques. Must have the ability to work in a fast pace environment, to work at different projects at the same time, and to think analytically. In addition, must have good prioritization and communication skills (oral and writing). Must be involved, careful, precise, team player, flexible, result/customer oriented and takes initiative. Initial understanding and interest in the field of tribology (lubrication science).
