The Research Engineer will be part of a team advancing Ford Motor Company in additive manufacturing. The focus of the team is to develop and implement additive manufacturing technologies for automotive metal tooling and components. The position includes participating in leading-edge design of automotive components by developing new metal alloys and heat treatment processes for additive manufacturing with internal team members, universities, and suppliers. The Research Engineer will work within a creative environment to explore, develop and advance additive manufacturing for smart vehicles in a smart world.
Research new powdered metal materials for additive manufacturing and sintering processes
Plan and execute research projects with benchmarking, literature search, experimental design, laboratory testing, data analysis, peer review; establish research conclusions and actionable recommendations
Collaborate with raw material suppliers, universities, and national laboratories to develop new materials and material processes
Perform mechanical characterization of metals using destructive and non-destructive test methods
Develop optimal sintering, post-processing, and coating strategies
Optimize existing material test methods, create new material test methods, develop standard operating procedures for laboratory experiments and test equipment
Work safely in laboratories, follow health and safety policies, stay current with safety training and best practices
Interface and collaborate with Ford Product Development and Vehicle Manufacturing teams to identify opportunities to implement new materials and process improvements
Support resolution of production and non-production issues using problem solving and failure analysis
Document and publish research in internal technical reports, external journals, and present at external conferences
Master’s Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering
2+ years of experience with powder metal and heat treatment manufacturing or research
2+ years of experience in characterization of powdered metal systems
PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy or Mechanical Engineering
Experience in mechanical material testing and characterization
Experience in press and sinter of PM, additive manufacturing in powder processes, and/or metal injection molding
Demonstrated capability in data analysis and data-driven decision making
Strong technical writing and presentation skills
Ability to lead and manage complex, multi-step projects with limited supervision
Team player with strong interpersonal skills
