The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at Colorado State University (CSU) offers a curriculum that integrates exceptional classroom learning and in-depth engineering practice for an unparalleled educational experience. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University (CSU) is seeking a Research Scientist in Sustainability Analysis. The selected individual will work with the Principal Investigator at CSU.
The incumbent will communicate and work with team members to develop a toolset that is capable of identifying promising combinations of production pathways and performance targets for bio-energy and co-product systems. This is a new paradigm for bioenergy modeling. The work will leverage agent-based modeling for the optimization of biofuel production pathways with geo-spatial resolution and multi-parameter optimization that includes cost, energy, water, and emissions criteria.
The work is divided in to four interconnected objectives:
1) development of modular engineering process models, 2) development of concurrent sustainability models, 3) optimization and evaluation of bioenergy configurations, and 4) external review. The four objectives above integrate to facilitate the evaluation of the US bioenergy sector. Foundational modeling work will build upon existing single-product models by adding a network multi-objective optimization economic and environmental model coupled with agent based modeling. The position can leverage modeling tools, web services, data, stakeholder relationships, and institutional knowledge created through complementary work, and will be performed in strong collaboration with the Principal Investigator.
This is 12 month full-time position (with appropriate benefits: healthcare, medical, dental, vision, retirement.).
Required Job Qualifications
- PhD in STEM field, with experience in sustainability;
- Demonstrated ability to produce publications; and
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- MS in STEM field, with a strong understanding of system modeling;
- Experience with life cycle inventory;
- Experience with appropriate software;
- Experience in Techno-economic modeling; and
- Statistical and analytics background.
