Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multi-program laboratory applying state of the art science and practical, high-value, cost-effective solutions to complex technical problems to protect the nation. Located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken, SC, the laboratory develops and deploys innovative technologies to address some of the nation’s environmental, energy, and national security challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
Candidate will perform testing and characterization of materials to support customer needs including metallography/microscopy, failure analysis, Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD), corrosion testing, mechanical/tensile testing, photography, hardness testing (metals/polymers), material composition verification (via handheld XRF or FTIR spectroscopy), heat treatment and specialized testing as requested. Candidate will interface with laboratory equipment vendors, perform maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and write procedures or work instructions for equipment operation. Candidate will submit samples as needed to other lab organizations for analytical characterization via LIMS-based software and will generate materials testing reports to customers as requested. Testing will normally occur in the laboratory, but some field work may be required. Candidate will work with SRNL researchers as needed to meet research and customer needs.
Other Duties:
Develop conventional engineering and scientific solutions to technical task objectives. Learn company and specific Division/Department systems and requirements for accomplishing tasks. Assist more senior technical personnel in performing related activities in more complex tasks. Accept delegated technical responsibility for a limited phase of a scientific or an engineering program. Support engineers or scientists performing related phases of a program. Assist in study, development, testing and analyses of designs, processes or procedures relating to a limited phase of a group's function. Organize and accept responsibility for the accuracy of limited technical analyses, and evaluation of results using standard techniques and procedures. Make scientific, engineering and design calculations. May prepare project cost proposal in an assigned area. Assist in the preparation of technical manuals, reports, and procedures. May advance technology within assigned area through the medium of patent disclosures, preparation and presentation of technical papers, articles and talks.

Note:
Salary offers are commensurate with candidate's experience and applicable education in comparison to incumbents.
Basic Education Qualifications
Bachelor degree in applicable science (i.e, chemistry) discipline from an accredited college or university.
Other Required Qualifications
Proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption authorization will be required for employment at SRNL. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in metallography, materials testing, laboratory safety/operations, hands-on operation of laboratory equipment, writing laboratory equipment operating procedures, interfacing with laboratory equipment vendors.
Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint programs, familiarity with LIMS-based laboratory information systems is a plus.
Familiar with laboratory safety and QA requirements. Hands-on/practical skills useful for experimental set-up and sample preparation.
