Currently Hydro One has a career opportunity for person with experience obtaining environmental approvals and permits (particularly Environmental Compliance Approvals) and providing support to ensure environmental compliance during construction and operation.
The Environmental Services Division has approximately one hundred employees who set corporate environmental policy and provide environmental services and support for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of Hydro One assets. We have a highly skilled and experienced workforce which obtains environmental approvals and supports lines and stations construction projects and operations. Our team is committed to protecting the environment and striving for continual improvement in our environmental management system and performance.
Specifically, we are looking for a person with at least four (4) years of relevant experience in fields such as: environmental engineering, stormwater management engineering, acoustical engineering, air emissions modeling, or construction related approvals and permits planning. Familiarity with environmental management, environmental monitoring or environmental assessment is an asset. Related experience should include working with multi-disciplinary teams to design and plan large projects and obtain permits and approvals, especially ECA and EASR approvals.
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on environmental deliverables for the planning, construction and operation of electrical infrastructure projects throughout Ontario
Lead the process to obtain provincial approvals issued under the Ontario Environmental Protection Act for emission sources at transmission and distribution stations and other approvals required for the construction or modification of those stations. These include Environmental Compliance Approvals for industrial sewage works and EASRs for stationary noise sources and backup power generators
Scope and estimate environmental deliverables for power station projects. Gather and analyze data to assess existing conditions; identify potential environmental impacts and controls; identify permits requirements for proposed works; identify mitigation measures and identify and evaluate alternative solutions
Support and review engineering design of stormwater management systems, spill safety and containment systems, contaminant abatement or treatment systems, and acoustic abatement
Prepare tender documents, evaluate, award and administer consultant contracts for acoustic (noise) assessments, air emissions modeling, drainage studies, archaeological services, Species at Risk Evaluations, Phase I and 2 Environmental Site Assessments, Designated Substance Surveys and environmental planning and monitoring services
Liaise with regulatory agencies, indigenous communities, other project stakeholders and internal groups on approvals, planning and permitting
Prepare reports and documentation to support environmental permit and approval applications
Prepare environmental management plans and operation manuals to direct Construction or Operations staff/contractors on issues related to environmental regulatory compliance and policy conformance. Provide ongoing support to these groups
Assist with ongoing system monitoring, regulatory reporting, noise complaint resolution, spill response support, and regulatory audits or inspections
Keep up to date on legislation, industry standards and construction best practices for environmental management
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services
Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications
Four to six years of relevant work experience obtaining Environmental Compliance Approvals or EASR approvals for industrial sewage works or noise emissions, and in the environmental aspects of construction planning, permitting and monitoring.
Four year university degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science, or equivalent.
Registered and in good standing with the Professional Engineers of Ontario as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Engineer In Training (EIT)
Detailed knowledge of environmental legislation and approval processes including Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs), Environmental Activity and Sector Registry (EASR) approvals, and construction related environmental permits
designing stormwater management systems or performing acoustic assessments
obtaining relevant approvals for industrial sewage works and air or noise emissions
supporting construction and operation to ensure environmental compliance
working with regulatory agencies, indigenous communities and members of the public
urgent response, such as responding to noise complaints or spills
Understanding of design, construction, operation and maintenance of environmental controls typically found in power stations
General understanding of
equipment specifications and infrastructure drawings
environmental planning, permitting and monitoring of power lines and stations or linear construction projects
municipal, provincial and federal environmental regulations, industry standards and construction best practices
permits for construction, such as permits to take water, tree or vegetation removal permits and access agreements for field routes for stations or lines construction
soil and groundwater assessment, site remediation and assessment / mitigation of Designated Substances and related waste management requirements
geographic information systems and relational database systems and tools
Valid class G Ontario driver’s license
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Windows software (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Working in adverse weather conditions and extensive walking may be required.
Having high initiative, excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills and interpersonal skills
Able to work independently on multiple projects, having strong organizational and time management skills
Adept at technical writing for preparation of environmental management documents, manuals, specifications and tender documents
Proficient in written and spoken English to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and prepare technical reports
Able to assimilate new tasks/information quickly and apply the skills to various situations
Able to understand the business implications of decisions and strive to improve organizational performance
Flexible and adaptable regarding changes to the work
Home Location and Travel Expectations
This position’s home location is Toronto, Ontario. This position requires periodic on road travel to project sites within Ontario, sometimes overnight.
