About the Position: This position is located with the U.S. Army Research and Development Center (ERDC), Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, Navigation Division.
May be filled as a Research General Engineer (0801), Research Architect (0808), Research Civil Engineer (Hydraulics) (0810), Research Mechanical Engineer (0830), or Research Physical Scientist (1301).
This position may be filled at either the Developmental DB-02 or the Full Performance Level DB-04.
Prepare data reports, technical presentations, and other technical documentation describing model testing and analysis of results.
Conduct one, two and/or three dimensional modeling of hydrodynamic flows and hydraulic structures using both physical and numerical models.
Prepare and convert schematic drawings of hydraulic structures into CAD format using AutoCAD, Solidworks, AutoDesk Inventor, etc.
Collect data using laser Doppler velocimetry, Acoustic Doppler Velocity meters and operate synchronized high speed digital camera systems.
Develop experimental and analytical methods including the creation of new or evaluation of existing analysis protocols as they relate to hydraulic engineering.
Prepare project budget and manpower requirements for engineering projects related to hydropower and inland structure investigations.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience below, to qualify for this position you must also meet the basic education requirements listed above:
To qualify at the DB-2 level must meet the basic education requirement.
To qualify at the DB-04 (GS-12-14) grade level: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in developing and/or executing complex theoretical research programs related to stream, river, coastal hydraulic engineering, and/or navigation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service DB-02 (GS-11).
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physical Science.
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:
Time in Grade Requirement for DB-02: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent DB-01(GS-4).
Time in Grade Requirement for DB-04: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent DB-02(GS-11).

If selected at the DB-XXXX-02 level, you have the potential to be non-competitively promoted to the DB-XXXX-04 level based on successful performance in the position.
