Provivi, Inc. based in Santa Monica, California is a Caltech start-up company founded in 2013 by Professor Frances Arnold, Pedro Coelho, and Peter Meinhold. Our mission is to provide disruptive chemistry solutions for agricultural, household, and professional pest control that are safe, environmentally benign, and have improved performance. We are developing innovative biocatalysis and formulation technologies, and are hiring the very best and brightest people to develop and commercialize our products.
As a member of the initial scientific team at Provivi, the successful hire will work under the direction of a senior scientist on various aspects of Provivi’s technology. The primary focus will be on molecular biology and biocatalysis.
Responsibilities May Include
Maintain and update the metabolic engineering team’s analytics data pipeline.
Perform high-throughput sample processing and subsequent data analysis of R&D samples.
Operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of analytical chemistry instruments, specifically GC-FID and GCMS.
Assist with the development and evaluation of analytical methods for compounds of interest.
Development microbial strains for the production of biochemical biopesticides.
Genetic manipulations of a variety of microbial and/or yeast strains using molecular biology techniques including transformation, gene deletions, and integrations;
Molecular biology techniques including DNA purification, DNA gel electrophoresis, ligation, restriction digestion, PCR including primer design, plasmid construction, and design, DNA sequence analysis, and transformation.
Microbiology techniques such as single colony purification, dilution series, plate counts, and aseptic technique. Microbial culture, including sampling and measuring optical density;
Biochemistry techniques such as execution and optimization of enzyme assays, measurement and interpretation of enzyme kinetics data, and analysis of enzymatic reactions using HPLC and GC analysis
Design, set up, execute, and document metabolic engineering experiments. Work with peers and management to define pertinent experiments, develop protocols, collect and analyze resultant data within agreed timelines;
Recording and documenting all experiments and resulting data;
Processing data for subsequent review and reporting;
Communicating results and lab issues in a timely manner with clarity and precision, both verbally and in writing;
Assist with lab maintenance as necessary (media preparation, autoclaving supplies, and waste, dishes).
Collaborate with chemists and chemical engineers on biocatalysis, fermentation, and product purification processes.
Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for internal use.
Remain current with the metabolic engineering patent and scientific literature and technology and champion new technologies. Collaborate and prepare internal research reports, invention disclosures, and technical presentation. May collaborate and author external publications and present research at external conferences.
Qualifications & Skills Include
BS or MS in biochemistry, chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, microbiology, or equivalent.
One (1) year of industrial experience in organic/analytical chemistry, metabolic engineering and/or cloning.
Knowledge of intermediate and advanced Excel functions such as lookup table and conditional statement.
Proficient in chromatographic data acquisition and familiarity in processing software packages such as Chromeleon and Spotfire.
Strong understanding of conventional organic synthetic chemistry techniques.
GCMS experience and some programming knowledge is a plus.
A good understanding of metabolic engineering, organic chemistry, microbiology and genetics principles.
Proven microbiology skills culturing and engineering microbes. Experience with engineering yeast is preferred.
Proficiency with techniques used to build large DNA assemblies from a library of DNA parts
Expertise using a variety of DNA transformation techniques into both eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Proficiency in standard methodologies to isolate and purify proteins and characterize activities
Strong organizational and time-management skills including managing projects simultaneously.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent attention to details and diligent adherence to deadlines and deliverables.
Ability to prioritize responsibilities and multi-task
Must be motivated, self-directed and work well with little oversight
