Through its partnership with the City of New York, CUNY’s Building Performance Laboratory is hiring qualified energy management professionals to serve as on-site consultants and fill critical staffing capacity needs at the Department of Citywide Administrative Services’ (“DCAS”) Division of Energy Management (“DEM”). For background, DEM serves as the hub for energy management for City government operations. DEM develops the City’s annual Heat, Light, and Power Budget; manages the City’s electricity, natural gas, and steam accounts; helps agency partners identify and pursue energy-saving opportunities; does energy efficiency and clean power generation projects across the City’s portfolio; and implements operations and maintenance best practices. Specifically, DEM is tasked with leading the City’s efforts to reduce emissions from City government operations 40 percent by 2025, 50 percent by 2030, and 80 percent by 2050 from baseline.
For this specific role, on behalf of DEM, CUNY BPL seeks to hire three (3) Energy Engineers who will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of energy efficiency and clean energy projects at City facilities. Please note that DEM is seeking two (2) engineer candidates specifically focused on the delivery of capital-funded energy efficiency projects and one (1) engineer candidate specifically focused on the delivery of clean energy projects.
Under this assignment, the person’s responsibilities may include the following:
Contributing to project scoping, including by overseeing and reviewing the findings from site audit and evaluation activities.
Performing technical calculations related to energy usage changes, generation capacity, energy cost savings, and avoided greenhouse gas emissions.
Conducting measurement and verification activities and ensuring that projects deliver scoped energy savings or generation.
Performing program data collection, tracking, and reporting and contributing to program strategy.
Providing engineering support and technical assistance across the division.
The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and experience to this position:
A bachelor’s and ideally master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, facilities, or environmental engineering.
Experience with the design and construction of energy efficiency or clean energy projects in diverse buildings that vary in age, size, and use.
At least three (3) years of experience in energy management, facilities management, commissioning, or mechanical construction project management.
Familiarity with the National Electric Code and NYC electrical and energy codes.
Familiarity with energy usage, energy cost savings, and avoided greenhouse gas emissions calculation methodologies.
Certified Energy Manager (CEM); Certified Energy Auditor (CEA); Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) or Existing Building Commissioning Professional (EBCP); or Building Operator Certification – Level 1 credentials.
Professional Engineer qualification.
Strong written and verbal communication skills and proficient computer skills, including Microsoft applications.
High level of productivity: able to meet and even exceed deadlines and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously
For energy efficiency engineer candidates specifically: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in analyzing building energy efficiency technologies and controls and specifying upgrades to improve the energy performance of building systems. Strong knowledge of applicable IESNA/ASHRAE design codes, design standards, and specification requirements, with the ability to interpret and apply them to specific project scopes.
For clean energy candidates specifically: Minimum of (3) years of experience in experience in the development, installation, and operation of solar PV projects including creating or reviewing solar PV system designs. Experience with Solar PV modeling software (e.g. Helioscope, PVSyst, etc.).
