SSAB Special Steels has an exciting opportunity for a metallurgist at our mill in Mobile, Alabama.
Minimum Requirements to Apply:
- B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline
- At least 2 years of relevant post-graduate education or industry experience and/or demonstrated technical proficiency.
POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for providing technical assistance and problem solving for Operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Works independently, with ability in at least one major areas of mill operations (Primary, Rolling and Finishing, Heat Treatment)
- Develops operating practices to produce quality steel products meeting or exceeding industry standards and customer requirements.
- Reviews manufacturing practices on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with established operating practices
- Design, execution and reporting of product development and quality improvement trials with some guidance from Senior Metallurgist
- Interprets data and makes recommendations to Operations management
- Investigates quality-related production problems and collaborates with other departments to find cost-effective solutions
- Implements SPC techniques for quality and productivity enhancements
- Manages disposition of material which does not meet requirements for intended application
QUALIFICATIONS
Competencies and Experience
Required:
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Strong computer skills, including the ability to navigate multiple databases
- Strong analytical capability and problem solving skills including some skill with SPC
Preferred:
- Work experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably with a metallurgical focus)
Education
Required:
- B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline
- At least 2 years of relevant post-graduate education or industry experience and/or demonstrated technical proficiency.
