About Us: Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is a multi-program laboratory applying state of the art science and practical, high-value, cost-effective solutions to complex technical problems to protect the nation. Located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, SC, the laboratory develops and deploys innovative technologies to address some of the nation’s environmental, energy, and national security challenges.
Roles and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will support SRNL and SRS operating facilities with materials science and engineering needs such as: materials consultation, failure analysis, material selection and compatibility reviews, service life prediction studies, materials testing for Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) and safety class applications, microscopy and metallography, mechanical testing, SEM/EDS analysis, hardness testing, heat treatment, protective coatings, corrosion testing, and support of SRS Engineering Standards and Guides related to materials.
SRS facilities include the Savannah River Tritium Enterprise, Defense Waste Processing Facility vitrification plant, waste processing Tank Farms, H-Canyon separations facility, L-Basin fuel storage facility, K-Area Materials Storage and general site infrastructure.
The candidate will interact with materials science, welding and NDE personnel as required to solve materials issues. May assist with or lead R&D projects and other materials-related tasks as needed. Is expected to generate reports and effectively communicate results, conclusions and recommendations to colleagues, management and customers. Also, the candidate may work alone or with multi-discipline teams. Assist laboratory personnel with equipment issues, troubleshooting, hazard analysis and writing operating procedures or other work control documents as needed.
Other Duties: Develop conventional engineering and scientific solutions to technical task objectives. Learn specific Division/Department systems and requirements for accomplishing tasks. Assist more senior technical personnel in performing related activities in more complex tasks. Accept delegated technical responsibility for a limited phase of a scientific or an engineering program. Support engineers or scientists performing related phases of a program. Assist in study, development, testing and analyses of designs, processes or procedures relating to a limited phase of a group's function. Organize and accept responsibility for the accuracy of limited technical analyses, and evaluation of results using standard techniques and procedures. Make scientific, engineering and design calculations. May prepare project cost proposal in an assigned area. Assist in the preparation of technical manuals, reports and procedures. May advance technology within assigned area through the medium of patent disclosures, preparation and presentation of technical papers, articles and talks.

Salary offers are commensurate with candidate's experience and applicable education in comparison to incumbents.
Basic Education Qualifications
Bachelor degree in applicable science or engineering discipline (materials science, metallurgical engineering or similar discipline)
Other Required Qualifications
Proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption authorization will be required for employment at SRNL. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
